Jake's Book Covers

The October, "Halloween Special" covers, where the cover art editors of Inter-Galactic eschew (for the moment) the mostly science-, and get on with the mostly fantastic fiction. Which is not to say that fantastic fiction isn't included regularly, but the covers haven't reflected that much until now. I'm hoping that, as I discover more of these, a few more may reflect more of the fantasy stories.

Vol 4 No 1 and Inside Page of No 2: The drone is one of those props that I built specifically for this series. Having had the notion at some point to craft at least one cover on the idea of surveillance, the further notion of surveillance drone also caught my imagination. While hardly a copy of, it was definitely inspired by the much larger drones depicted in the 2013 (whoa! 2013?!) movie Oblivion, as seen at right (via the web). I started with a steel mixing bowl, and then added things.

Vol 4 No 5: the background, what's intended to look like some mechanical space in an alien starship is the top of the ball turret of the B-24 Witchcraft.

Vol 4 No 6(A): I did, in fact, take a few photos along the road on my way to Devil's Tower specifically for the "just in case I want to use one in an illustration," which wound up here. That really is Nebraska 97, looking north.

Vol 4 No 6(E): The railroad car is one of the pieces of rolling stock on view at the Illinois Railway Museum.

Vol 4 No 9: there actually are "catacombs" under downtown Indianapolis, though they are nothing so mysterious as just old architecture. As far as I know. Indiana Landmarks has tours of the City Market Catacombs from May through October -- it's a popular tour just before Halloween! -- with 30 minute walks under Whistler Plaza.
