You may ask: "So?! Does it work? Does her mad scheme play out? Is the Empire brought down?" Well, yes, of course. I wouldn't go through all this and imagine that Vera and her allies would get done wrong in the end (although there would need to be that possibility to keep up the tension in the last two books). The Curzon out-worlds are naturally ripe for revolution (which ties up the token occupation units on those Earths), and in an overly self-assured conceit focused on the "ground game" invasion of Vera's world (hey, except for that one time, it always worked before, right?) they simply can't imagine hundreds of ether dreadnoughts suddenly appearing over their planet to launch a counter-attack with massive, overwhelming, and devastating force. The Empire is done, blasted off the face of its Earth, and all is, um, well it's at least O.K. in the universes. Y'know, now they just have this mess to clean up -
And have no doubt that Ms. Packard will be making an appearance in Mr. Sokolov's series. Would I pass up an opportunity like that? NO.
As an aside, if I could get someone to actually write these, I would have David Weber do it. His Honor Harrington series is the kind of just-hard-enough-sci-fi yet still-pulpy-enough-to-let-the-good-guys-win kind of novels that are pretty much exactly what I imagine Vera Packard's books would be. I actually had the first three or four of Packard's book covers done before I started reading Weber's Harrington books, and was surprised to find some parallels between what he'd written and what I had imagined in Vera's story. I now have to be careful to not use Weber for too close an inspiration.
And yes, yet another echo: Ms. Packard's stance and weapon on the Onslaught cover was more deliberately related to the stance on the Overwhelmed cover. She is, after all, in a similar situation.
