The Notes - 2014 Edition

     Some of the materials cited in the 2014 Edition duplicate those of 2015, but full notation will be given in both.

     Some of my "research" was done "the old fashioned way," that is to say with printed works, and some via the Internet.  (Update 2018: since it's been a few years, reader beware that some of the links following may no longer be viable.  So it goes with the world wide web: things change.)

     I suppose you could refer to these following as a "bibliography after a fashion," as they are the most often cited, or contributed to the general background.

     Earl Swift: The Big Roads

     Background information on the condition of roads generally, and the construction of better roads including the trans-continental linking Interstate System.

Much of the ephemera that Dreiser, and others, amassed during his lifetime was transferred to Penn following his death, and a nice collection has been made available digitally.

     wikipedia - true it may be lambasted by purists, but many of its entries are sufficient to this work, and also include references useful for such like this project. 

     Shorpy.com - an on-line collection of images reproduced from negatives and glass plates in the Library of Congress, with digital restoration for the modern viewer.  Time.com has a nice story about Shorpy, and the work that goes into that archive. Shorpy images are also available as prints.  Noted in caption as (Shorpy) .

      The Library of Congress itself also has many of their uncountable pieces of ephemera available via the Web at their

Prints and Photographs Online Catalog.  Noted in caption as (LOC).

     Industrial Heritage Committee, Inc., Buffalo New York.  Dedicated to preserving the industrial history of the Buffalo area, especially along the Buffalo River/Ship Canal.  Among other things, they have placed point-of-interest placards near Fuhrmann Blvd, on the Heritage Trail, including historic photos with accompanying notes about the elevators.  Those notes were the source of information about the old elevators in my current photographs; the old photos reproduced here for historic images of the Buffalo "scene."  Noted in caption as (IHCI).

     Their site is worth a look-see; I was amazed at the information they have on the old industrial buildings of Buffalo, and their interest is also international: one of the stories concerns a grain silo in Marseille, France, that was converted to an opera house! They also do boat tours down the Ship Canal -- which means I'm going to have to shuffle back to Buffalo sometime.
